Death Notice:

Obituary Date: 1922-05-26

Information: After an illness of only a few days, Mrs. Lucretia Dunlap, widow of John S. Dunlap, died at her home in Ripley, Monday morning, May 22, 1922.  Death was due to a weakened condition of the heart following bronchial trouble of a few weeks ago.  Lucretia Ellen Piercy, daughter of William M. and Elizabeth Piercy, was born at Mont Ross, Randolph County, West Virginia, April 8th, 1854, and therefore was 68 years, 1 month and 14 days old at her death.  Her husband, the late Squire Dunlap, died on December 13, 1921, or only a little more than five months ago.  Mrs. Dunlap grew to young womanhood in Randolph County near the scenes of her birth, later coming to Jackson County to make her home with her uncle, Mr. John Piercy, who resided at Hemlock at that time.  She was united in marriage to John S. Dunlap on October 8th, 1884, by Rev. Owens, then a Baptist minister in that section.  To this union was born one child, a daughter, Mrs. A. S. McCoy of Ripley.  In addition to this, she reared two of her nieces.  She and her husband were charter members of the United Brethren Church at Cottageville and both held their membership at that place until death came.  Her husband was laid to rest in the Cottageville cemetery and her body will be reposed in the same cemetery after Wednesday of this week.  Mrs. Dunlap leaves behind her out of four sisters and three brothers, just one brother and one sister, who are Mr. Elias Piercy and Mrs. John R. Corrick, who both reside in Santa Rosa, California.  Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. McCoy, two grandsons and two granddaughters also remain to mourn their loss.      (from the Betty Kessel McIntyre collection)
