Information: Rebecca Lynn Simmons Drennon, 57, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully February 8,2015 with family at her side in the palliative care unit at the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness. Becky had been a resident of Parkersburg for the last 34 1/2 years where she and husband, David, raised their family and enjoyed life together with many friends. Becky was born October 13, 1957 in Charleston WV to Gleston and Sybil Simmons. She grew up on the family farm in Kenna, Jackson County, was a 1975 graduate of Ripley High School and went on to Glenville State College where she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1979 and then a master's degree in early childhood education from West Virginia University in 1982. Becky taught one year in the Jackson County school system prior to her marriage to David in 1980 and then taught for six years in Wood County prior to starting a family. Becky was simply a friend to all. Her sweet disposition and compassion were evident in her boundless concern and care for others, whether family, friend or total stranger. She was given a special gift from God to teach and love young children and labored endlessly and joyously to teach them about her Savior and love them as He would. Becky loved the created order of family and all that meant in her life, as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she taught 2 & 3 year olds for many years and directed the Cherub Choir. She was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class and the Lesley Turley Circle. In recent years Becky had also been an active participant in the RSVP Senior Stitchers service organization. Becky is survived by her husband, David, of 34 1/2 years; daughters, Hannah (Ben) McMillan of Hopewell VA, Jennifer (Mitch) Huber of Louisville Ky; and son, Caleb, of Parkersburg; granddaughter, Elena Joy McMillan; brother, Greg (Kathy) of Kenna; sisters, Leigh Ann (Sven) Jonsson of Taylorsville KY, and Kim (Greg) Swann of Circleville OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Gleston and Sybil Lanham Simmons. She was eagerly looking forward to dancing with her son, Caleb, at his upcoming wedding to Miss Emily Walsh. A celebration of Becky's life will be led by Dr. Kurt Busiek on Saturday, February 14th at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1710 23rd Street, Parkersburg, with burial to follow in nearby Mount Olivet Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation also at the church on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church where those gifts will be used to further ministry efforts for children. Leavitt's Funeral Home of Parkersburg is facilitating the arrangements for the family.
