Obituary Date: 1940-07-26
Information: Funeral services for Miss Fannie Douglas, 61 year old owner of Ripley Landing Farms, who died Thursday at the Hillsview Sanitarium in Washington, Pa., as the result of the stroke suffered last spring, were held from the McCoy Funeral Home in Wheeling at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening, with Rev. Daniel K. Poling, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church there in charge. Saturday afternoon, the 3:30 train winding down the beautiful Ohio Valley, brought Miss Douglas to her home where she lay in state until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon when brief services were conducted by Rev. James P. Hutchinson and she was laid to rest in the Douglas cemetery nearby. Miss Douglas was born at Ripley Landing, a daughter of Hiram and Mary Parr Douglas, pioneer residents of this section of the county. She received her early education here, attended Washington Seminary at Washington, Pa., and completed her studies at West Liberty State Teachers College. She had been a teacher at the Washington grade school in Wheeling for the past eleven years. Stricken ill in the school room on April 25 of this year, she was later taken to the Washington Sanitarium where she remained until her death at 4 o'clock Tuesday July 18. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Edwin M. Holliday and Mrs. Lorena Merrill, both of Wheeling. She also leaves a host of friends, both here and at Wheeling, who deeply feel their loss at her passing.
