Information: DEEM FUNERAL HELD MONDAY - Mrs. Ella G. Deem, 80 year old widow of the late Henry W. Deem, for many years editor of the Jackson Herald, died at the home of her son, Carroll Deem, in Beckley, last Saturday as the result of an attack of pneumonia. She was ill only a few days and her many friends in Ripley had not learned of her illness until news came of her death. Her husband before his death in 1916 had been editor and publisher of the Jackson Herald for 32 years and was well known in this section of the state. He had also been postmaster at Ripley for twenty-two years. After the death of Mr. Deem, the widow continued as publisher of the paper for two years, at the end of which time she sold her holdings to a group of Ripley business men who continued the publication of the paper. The funeral services were held at the First M. E. Church in Beckley Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock after which the body was brought to Ripley where another service was held at the King Memorial church Monday afternoon and interment was in the Deem plot in the cemetery here. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bernice E. Crow of Cunningham, Kansas and Mrs. Gertrude Roush of Beckley, and two sons, Carroll H. Deem and Julian I. Deem, both of Beckley. Mrs. Deem was widely known in Jackson county and was a native of Grant district. She came to Ripley with her husband in the early eighties when he became the owner and editor of the Herald and continued to make her home here until a few yars ago when she moved to Beckley, where she has since lived with the son at whose home she died. The services here were conducted by Rev. J. R. Withrow, who read the following obituary: Ella Gertrude Deem, daughter of A. C. and Philena Knowles Tidd, born at Murraysville, Jackson county, January 12, 1856, died at the home of her son, Carroll H. Deem, of Beckley, April 4, 1936, at 4:20 p.m. On July 18, 1882 she was united in marriage to Henry W. Deem of Ripley. Mr. Deem was editor and publisher of the Jackson Herald for 32 years and postmaster at Ripley for 22 years. After the death of Mr. Deem on April 16, 1915, Mrs. Deem took control of the Herald and operated it for 2 years. Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher in the public schools. In 1921 Mrs. Deem went to Beckley to make her home with her son. She was an active and devoted member of the First Methodist church of Beckley. She was interested in every worth while cause, giving herself in unselfish service to the community. She was affiliated with the D. A. R., King's Daughters and Woman's Club. She is survived by the following four children, Mrs. Bernice D. Crow, of Cunningham, Kansas; Carroll H. Deem, Mrs. Gertrude D. Roush and Julian I. Deem, all of Beckley; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One sister, Mrs. Richard Hoblitzell, of Norwalk, Conn. Her only brother, Dr. E. T. Tidd, of Staples, Texas, passed away in September, 1935.
