Information: J. W. DAWKINS RITES FRIDAY - Funeral services for J. W. Dawkins, retired prominent cattle and livestock dealer, who died Wednesday at the home of a daughter in Parkersburg, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Mount Moriah church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Born and reared in Wood county, Mr. Dawkins moved to Jackson county while a young man where he became widely known as a livestock dealer. In 1882 he was married to Miss Rosa Stout, and entering into a partnership with his father-in-law, entered the livestock business. With Ripley as their shipping point, they bought cattle through-out Jackson, Roane, Kanawha and Wirt counties, and every Saturday they made up a special cattle train from Ripley to Millwood which becmae widely known as the ""Stout and Dawkins Special"". Mr. Dawkins had been living in retirement in recent years with his daughter, Mrs. Hallie Cain, at 2552 Camden Terrace, Parkersburg, and was 84 years old at the time of his death. Besides the daughter with whom he resided, he is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Ruth Christopher of Parkersburg; a son, W. Kay Dawkins, former Wood county court president and widely known to Jackson county folk as a livestock auctioneer; four brothers, Albert Dawkins of Akron, Ohio, Bush Dawkins of Lowell, Ohio, Ellsworth Swesey of Sandyville, and Monroe Swezey of Parkersburg; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosa Stout Dawkins, died last November and a daughter, Mrs. Howard Baker, died only a week ago.
