Information: Arthur L. Davis, 88, of Fairplain, died November 27, 2011, at his home, with his family by his side. Mr. Davis had been fighting dementia for several years, but enjoyed sitting on his porch being cared for by his family. Until recently, he still had his sense of humor and was able to take rides with his grandchildren and go out to eat and visit. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army after being in Europe in World War II. He retired from Exxon with 30 years of service. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church of Ripley. He was a member of the Lions Club and worked with Meals on Wheels, Jackson County Senior Citizens, the church and many neighbors and friends who needed help. After retiring, he raised honeybees, cattle and gardens, and made beautiful pieces of furniture for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered by his family for his sternness, dry humor and intelligence. Art was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Wooten Davis; father, Earl Davis; mother, Eula May Davis; his brother, Frank Davis; and granddaughter, Mary Ann Lawrence. Survivors include his stepson and wife of 49 years, Jerry and Patricia Lawrence of Summersville; granddaughter and husband, Joy and Eddie Estep of Elkview; grandson, Mark Lawrence of South Charleston; great-grandchildren, Candice Estep Tackett, Cassie Estep and Christina and Erica Lawrence; and six great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday, December 1, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Charles Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 205 Court St., Ripley WV 25271. Friends may send online condolences to www.tylermountainfuneralhome.com.
