Information: RAVENSWOOD - Jack Douglas Cooper, 74, of Ravenswood, died July 29, 2011 at CAMC General Division. He was born March 13, 1937 in Chesapeake to the late Jack S. and Opal Barnett Cooper. Doug was a member of the Ravenswood Church of Christ. He was a master mechanic for the Operating Engineers Local 132, with 45 years of service. He was also a member of Ravenswood Ashton 12 AF&AM and an avid Mountaineer fan. Doug served his country in the US Air Force and was a member and jet fighter aircraft mechanic of the 4734 Air Defense Group, 74th Fighter Squadron, known as ""The Fighting Tigers,"" stationed in Thyle, Greenland. He was also very active in helping the union access and improve their healthcare benefits starting in the early 1970's, long before it was popular to do so, and also helped improve the equal rights within their membership. Doug was known as a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather; it was important for his children to learn his teachings of unconditional love. The family would like to thank the staffs of the ICU at CAMC General Division and St. Francis Hospital.. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Alma Jeanne Cooper of Ravenswood, who sadly also lost her mother, Faye Shaffer Kinser Catrell, formerly of Charleston, on July 29, 2011; son, Gregory S. Cooper of Charleston; Kim R. Cooper of St. Albans; grandson Jeremy Cooper and wife Amber of Huntington; two granddaughters, Wynter N. and Erin E. Grinnan of Charleston; two great-grandsons, Isaiah Lacy and Vedder Cooper; and his brother, David Parks of St. Albans. In addition to his parents, a son, Jack Cooper, Jr., preceded him in death. Service is 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, at Roush Funeral Home, with Minister Grady Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Ravenswood Cemetery. Friends may visit the family two hours prior to service Tuesday at the funeral home.
