Information: RIPLEY - Charles Currence ""Chief"" Coffman, 86, of Ripley went to meet the Lord Thursday, June 7, 2007. He was born August 23, 1920, in Greenbrier County, a son of the late Charles and Ada Coffman. Charles was a member of the Ripley Baptist Temple, where he served as trustee for 52 years. He served in CCC Camp from 1937-1939 and was a member of the Army Air Corp in World War II. serving in North Africa and Italy. He was owner and operator of Chief Motor Sales for 22 years and Three C Motors for 35 years. He served as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Ripley. He was the only sheriff elected for three terms (1961, 1973, 1977) in Jackson County. Survivors include his wife, Bea; son, Charles ""Chuck"" Coffman of Athens, OH; brothers, Clifford of St. Marys, Melvin of Denver, CO, and Darrell of Winder, GA; sister, Betty Mankins of Parkersburg; several nieces and nephews ad dear friends Lester Click and Harold Hayhurst. Service were held Sunday, June 10, 2007, at the Ripley Baptist Temple with Pastor Rick Perrine officiating. Burial followed in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville. Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, was in charge of arrangements.
