Information: Charleston Gazette publisher William Edwin “Ned” Chilton III died suddenly Saturday shortly after noon in the University Club at Washington, D.C. He had competed in a squash tournament when he collapsed. He was 65. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston. Chilton was eulogized Sunday as “an indefatigable crusader of individual rights and fearless watchdog of government.” Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Easley Early Chilton, and daughter, Susan.
