Information: John D. ""Jack"" Catalano, of Evans, formerly of Charleston, passed away on November 1, 2011 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Jack was born in Charleston on April 7, 1935, son of the late Don and Gladys Catalano. He was a graduate of Charleston High School and attended Morris Harvey College. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956, serving in the USMC Honor Guard in Washington DC. He was stationed at the Marine barracks at 8th and I Streets. Upon his discharge from the service he began working at Central Distributing Company, a business founded by his parents in 1948. He served as CEO from 1972 until the company was sold in 1989. His many other business interests included real estate, commercial trucking, banking and the Charleston Gunners basketball team. He began a second career in 1991 with the State of West Virginia Division of Highways Equipment Division at Buchannon. He retired from the state in 2009. In 2006 he completed training and became a licensed minister of the WV United Methodist Conference, serving various churches in Upshur County until his health would no longer allow. Jack served as President of the Kanawha County Commission from 1975-76. He has also served on the Kanawha County Zoning Commission and the Kanawha County Airport Authority. He served on the Board of Trustees at Salem College, the Athletic Board of West Virginia State College and was a Gold Coat Member of the West Virginia University Mountaineer Athletic Club. He was involved in many charities including the City of Hope, Boy Scouts of America and United Methodist Charities. Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley (Carpenter) Catalano, daughters, Kelley (Mark) Mitchell of Yawkey and Anna Maria Catalano of Ripley; sons, Don (Stacie) Catalano of Ripley, Kenneth (Tori) Catalano of Greer SC; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; special Aunt Marjorie Arnett of Columbus OH; special friends, John and Nancy Custodio and family of Clementon NJ; and his treasured farmily pet, Koda. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 5, at 5 p.m. at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Reverend Charles Hicks officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home three hours prior to the service. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to CAMC Mamorial Division, five East and four North, the staff of Hubbard Hospice House and doctors and staff of the David Lee Cancer Center for the compassion and care shown during Jack's illness.
