Death Notice:

Obituary Date: 1947-08-08

Information: Death came peacefully late last Thursday afternoon to one of Ripley's oldest residents, Mrs. Viola Batten Anderson, who died at her Main Street home at the age of 85 years.  She had been ill a long time and her condition had been critical for several days and death was expected.  The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Ward H. Harvey in charge and burial was in the family plot in the Pine Hill Cemetery.  Together with her late husband, William W. Anderson, she operated the Anderson Hotel in Ripley and was one of the community's oldest citizens.  Born near Gandeeville, Roane County, the daughter of Thomas and Rachel Gandee Batten, she was a direct descendent of Jesse Hughes, the heroic Indian fighter.  Her husband preceded her in death in 1936, and her only survivors are three nephews, Auville Batten of Ripley, Otho Batten of Pikeville, Ky. and Fred Batten of Parkersburg, and one great-nephew, Dr. James Batten of South Parkersburg.
