Information: Howard R. Carney, Vienna, died Friday afternoon after a short illness.  He was born in Fairplain, a son of the late D. W. and Elizabeth Casto Carney.  He taught in Jackson County schools for 14 years and was a member of the Ripley IOOF Lodge, where he served as Noble Grand, the American Legion Post 15, Marietta Beagle Club and the National Rifle Association.  He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy and was retired from Johns Manville with more than 20 years of service  He was the past president of the Glass and Ceramic Workers Local No. 22.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia Brooks Carney; two sons, H. L. and Joe Carney of Mansfield, Ohio; four daughters, Sharon Goodwin of Washington, Carol Anderson of Lykens, Pa., Colleen Gumm of Parkersburg and Patsy Gomez of Helmet, Calif.; and several grandchildren.  Services were Monday at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley with the Rev. David Cox officiating.  Burial was in Fairplain Cemetery.
