Information: COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - On June 6, 2005, after a short illness, Mr. D. H. (Harold) Carney died in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  He was born October 8, 1920, a native of Jim Ridge Road in Jackson County.  He served his country by volunteering for the U. S. Navy during World War II.  During those years that he served in the Navy, his brothers and sisters enjoyed reading his very interesting letters telling us of the many voyages he made around the world while on board ship. Egypt and the Phillippine Islands are just two of the many places we can recall hearing him speak about going ashore.  After his discharge from the Navy, he and his wife, Nella Thomason-Carney, moved to the city of Akron, Ohio, where he worked for Goodrich Rubber Tire Manufacturing for 15 years.  During this time, he took evening courses to further his education, having finished only the eighth grade at Big Pine School in Jackson County.  In Akron he aquired his real estate license and from Akron he moved his family to Vallejo, California, San Jose and San Diego areas.  From the San Diego area he moved back east to Jacksonville, Florida, but again decided he would like the climate in Colorado, where he had been living for 22 years at the time of his sudden illness and death.  With the help of his family he managed to become a successful real estate broker and property investor.  At the time before he became ill, he and his son had purchased a house in Prescott, Arizona, where they had moved some belongings for the coming winter and retirement.  He loved life, God and all people.  He spoke of not being dead, but living in the place Jesus went to prepare. ""Know that my last earnest prayer is that my loved ones be ready someday to meet me there"". One of his favorite songs was ""Amazing Grace"".  Even though he lived and worked in many different places, he never forgot his original home and always found the time to visit his folks in West Virginia.  His last visit in person was in October 1996.  After this visit, he kept in touch by telephone and rarely did he miss a week calling at least one of his brothers or sisters.  Among those people who will miss him are his wife, Nella (Thomason) Carney, his daughter, Karen; his son, David, all of Colorado Springs.  Swan-Law Funeral Home of Colorado Springs was in charge of arrangements.  Burial took place in Colorado.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Austin and Linnie Hill Carney, brother, James Basil Carney of Evans; sister, Blondena Carney of Charleston. Surviving brothers are Darrell Carney of Given, R. D. Carney and Willard W. Carney of Millwood, and sisters, Velmada Williams of Millwood, Willa Jean Holderman of Louisville, Ohio, Mary Barnette of Evans and Betty Carney of Given and several nieces and nephews.
