Obituary Date: 1947-07-04

Information: Two Sandyville youths, both veterans of World War II, were killed instantly Sunday afternoon at 5:30 when an American plane in which they were making a pleasure flight over the community crashed with terrific force into a rough hillside on the W. M. Thorn farm on Drift Run, just a few miles north of Sandyville.  The victims of the disaster were Olen Smith, 23, Navy veteran and pilot of the plane, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith of ...; Robert Carmichael, 27, also a Navy veteran and a farmer in the Lockhart community and a son of  Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Carmichael and a brother of Denver Carmichael of Ripley and Mrs. Brady Hickle Jr. of Kenna.  Mr. Thorn and his granddaughter, Wilda June Thorn, were the first to reach the scene of the crash and they said that both men were dead when they arrived.  Mr. Thorn said that the plane had been circling low over the community and that it was headed down Drift Run when the motor sputtered a few times and went into a nose dive  into the steep hillside.  The same version was given by Dan Thorn, who was on a hill not far from the scene of the crash.  Smith, who was piloting the plane, was reported to have received his flying license only a short time ago.  Olen Smith was the driver of the car which was hit by a B&O train at the New Era crossing last February which Merill Weekley lost his life and Grant Weekley Jr. was injured.  Smith is survived by his parents, two brothers, Clude of Kenna and Oliver of Sandyville, and two sisters, Mrs. Freda Lincicome of Wolford, Ohio and Mrs. Irene Patterson of Ripley.  Carmichael is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Carmichael; a daughter, Shirley; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Carmichael of Belpre; and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. C.L. Schiefer of Bucyrus, Ohio, David Carmichael Jr. of Silverton, Denver Carmichael of Ripley, Charles Carmichael of Belpre, Ohio, Warren Carmichael of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Brady Hickle Jr. of Kenna, and Misses Mary and Joan Carmichael of Belpre.  Carmichael buried in the Drift Run cemetery and Smith buried in the Independence cemetery.
