Information: REV. CARDER, U.M. CHURCH MINISTER, SUCCUMBS SUDDENLY - Rev. Orton H. Carder, veteran United Methodist minister and a Ripley native, succumbed to a heart attack following a short bout with flu at his home near Point Pleasant, Monday night, Nov. 25. He resided at Hickory Chapel, Route 2. He was 77. The veteran minister was born near Ripley on June 13, 1897, a son of the late Burton and Matilda A. Paine. He attended Ripley schools, graduating from the Normal School in Ripley, and then began teaching. He answered the call to the ministry in 1915 and united with the United Brethren Conference on August 15, 1918. He was ordained in 1927. Among churches he served in West Virginia were those at Silverton and Leon. He was a veteran member of the Western Star Lodge No. 11, AF and AM, holding membership in that lodge for more than forty years. Rev. Carder married Chloie Wilson, also of Ripley, on Dec. 28, 1917 and the couple would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this month. To this union were born five children. They include Mrs. Eldrige (Alice) Sauer of Jefferson Avenue, Pt. Pleasant, Mrs. Charles D. (Anna) Proffitt, and Mrs. James O. (Aris) Langdon, both of Rt. 2, Pt. Pleasant; Ancel B. Carder of Bradenton, Florida and Axtell W. Carder, of Morristown, New Jersey. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Carder and the five children are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his family. Funeral services were held in the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Pt. Pleasant, where he held his membership, on Friday afternoon with Dr. F. Emerson Wood and Rev. Earl Perkins officiating. Interment was in Suncrest Cemetery.
