Information: Former Jackson County official James Richard Brotherton, 75, of Cottageville, died Tuesday, June 12, 1990 at Jackson General Hospital following a long illness. He was born August 2, 1914 in Charleston, the son of Mary Hazel Coe Brotherton and Lewis Roscoe Brotherton. Mr. Brotherton retired from the U. S. Army in 1958 as a Lt. Colonel, having served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was employed in government Civil Service until 1974 when he retired to Jackson County. He was a former Jackson County Commission president and served on the Jackson County Housing Authority, Jackson County Airport Authority and Jackson County Solid Waste Authority. He was appointed county road commissioner following his tenure as county commissioner. Mr. Brotherton was a member of Cottageville Masons, Cottageville Eastern Star, Shrine and Scottish Rites, Lexington, Ky. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine May Hauger Brotherton of Cottageville; son, James Richard Brotherton Jr., Manassas, Va.; daughters, Mary Elaine Brotherton Griffith, Sandyville; Helen Lynn Brotherton Oliver, Louisville, Ky; brothers, Reese Brotherton, Murraysville, John Brotherton, Charleston, Neil Brotherton, Homestead, Fla.; sisters, Regina Skeen, Kenna, Valeria Powers, Ripley, Mary Rawlings, Charleston; eight grandchildren, Richard Glenn Griffith, Sandyville, James Richard Brotherton III, Springfield, Va., Teresa Lynn Griffith, Ripley, Helen Lorraine Oliver, Louisville, Ky, Linda Denise Brotherton, Alexander, Va., David W. Jackson Griffith, Ripley; James Robert Oliver, Louisville, Ky., David Allan Brotherton, Manassas, Va; five great-grandchildren. Service was Friday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans with the Rev. Gerald Sayre officiating. Burial with military and Masonic rites was in Jackson County Memory Gardens.
