Obituary Date: 1917-05-11

Information: Mary Sophia Potts, the subject of this sketch, was born in Monroe Co., Ohio, August 16, 1845 and departed this life May 4, 1917, aged 71 years 8 months and 18 days.  She was joined in marriage to her now bereaved husband May 31, 1868.  To this union were born seven children:  Edgar C. of Upshur Co., Luray Valley, deceased, Lacey Richmond, deceased, Gladdis Rebecca, deceased, Loadice Sayre of Angerona, Oshel Addo of Angerona and Odelet Woodar of Upshur Co. With the three first named, who were born in Noble Co., Ohio, this small family migrated to Jackson Co., W. Va. September 11, 1874.  Here we reared our cabin in the woods two and one-half miles from any public road and with this debt of this rude homestead on our hands we might give a long and hard experience of a practical pioneer life, the harder and rougher periods of which was only made to be tolerable by the soft, sweet voice and tender love of her whose remains we today committed to mother earth. About the end of those perilous days our heroine was stricken with that distressing ailment called jaundice and this resulted in permanent invalidity which today culminated in landing her in the darkness of the cold, damp grave.  Not withstanding the fact that she has been a great charge for the last 25 years, we would not exchange such charge for another 25 years for an eternity of this sadly lonliness.  My friend, you can never know what a lovely wife is worth until you lose her, but---A long impressive poem followed and was signed S. J. Brooks   *Local items:  Mary Sophia Brooks, wife of Samuel Brooks, was buried at Otterbein cemetery at 2 o'clock.        **Sam Brooks died 1923, age 82 1/3 yrs.  Buried Otterbein cemetery.
